Learn More About Oil Changes

Thinking of having your vehicle’s oil changed but don’t know where to start? There are various oils and fluids in more modern vehicles and when people talk about an oil change, they are mostly referring to engine oil. Engine oil is designed to lubricate and cool down fast-moving engine parts which make it vital to a vehicle. If a car ever leaks while driving and all the oil is lost, the entire engine would be ruined in just a few minutes. Like most fluids in a vehicle, engine oil needs to be changed from time to time to keep the vehicle running optimally. Engine oil loses its lubricating properties because it gets dirty and starts to break down chemically after time and exposure to heat. If you’re looking into getting your car’s oil changed, it’s best to know the basics about an oil change, what it is, and what the benefits are.

What Is An Oil Change?

Anyone who owns a vehicle knows that an oil change is an intricate routine when it comes to taking care of your car. In order for a car to run, it must first have a sufficient amount of oil. After a while, the oil must be replenished with new oil for the car to run smoothly. An oil change is a process of draining old, used engine oil from a vehicle into a pan, and then replacing it with clean, fresh oil and a new oil filter. Like most lubricating and cooling fluids, engine oil eventually needs to be changed. Particles of metal and debris from engine parts gradually darken and make the oil thicker which decreases its effectiveness. Small, replaceable parts called oil filters are designed to remove any existing debris, but they also have a limited lifespan and need to be replaced eventually. When you get your oil changed, it’s best to change the filter too.

Engine oil lubricates and cools the moving components of your engine. Vehicle manufacturers specify exactly which oil should be used in each engine, which can be found in two locations: the oil cap on the engine or in your owner’s manual. The specifications include the type and viscosity of the oil as well as the additives required for protecting and lubricating the moving parts of the car, truck, or SUV’s engine. Oil and vehicle manufacturers vary in their advice on oil change and filter change frequency, but it’s good to have them both changed at least every six months or every 3,000 to 7,000 miles of driving, whichever comes first. This frequency strikes a good balance between maximizing your oil’s life and minimizing engine wear from driving with dirty oil.

Things To Know About Oil Changes For Your Car

  • Check Oil Level

How Often To Check the Oil Level

You should always keep an eye on your car’s oil levels as even newer cars can need their oil to be topped off between changes. It’s best to check your oil level at least once a month and if you notice a leak, it’s best to get repairs done right away. If you recently just got a new car, make sure to check your owner’s manual and follow the recommendations. Some newer cars have electronic oil monitors and don’t require traditional dipsticks for manual inspection which makes things a lot easier and more accessible. If you do have a dipstick and you decide to check it for yourself, make sure your car is parked on level ground, pull out the dipstick from the engine and wipe off any oil from its end. Then you can insert the dipstick back into its tube, when you pull it back out you can inspect to see where the oil ends and if it is still at the proper oil level. If the oil is below the minimum mark, then you need to add oil. The oil’s color is also important. If it appears light or milky, then coolant may have seeped into the engine. Check for any metal particles too for the possibility of internal engine damage.

How Often to Change The Oil

Some people swear by the “every 3 months or 3,000 miles” rule, but advanced engines may have specific guidelines. A lot of automakers have oil change intervals of 7,500 or 10,000 miles, which is around 6 or 12 months. Your owner’s manual will always include more detailed information about your car which can also help inform your mechanic. It’s not just about the miles as well. If you don’t drive your car a lot, your oil still needs to be kept fresh. Even if you drive fewer miles each year than your automaker suggests changing the oil, you should still be getting your oil changes twice a year. This is because the oil gets less effective as it ages and not getting your engine warm enough can lead to shorter engine life.

  • Choosing the right oil

Choosing The Right Oil

It’s always a good idea to look at your owner’s manual when choosing the right oil for your car. Many newer models have the car’s motor oil printed on the cap where you add oil. It’s best to know what’s recommended or required by your automaker. If you have an older car, you don’t need special motor oil if it’s still running well. You’ll only need synthetic oil if your manufacturer asks for it as it costs two to four times as much as conventional oil. Synthetic oil is made to be more effective at resisting breakdown and withstanding high temperatures. There are instances where resistance to breakdown can help prolong the life of your engine. If you only use your car for short periods of time, standard motor oil may not get your car warm enough to burn off moisture and impurities. Synthetic oil can help engines that are prone to sludge build-up which is helpful as this residue can block the oil flow which may lead to engine death.
